World’s Finest #235 has the distinction of being the greatest comic book cover of all time. Interestingly, the event seen on the cover is revealed in the first two pages of the book and has nothing to do with the plot of the story which sees Superman and Batman team up to stop the villainous Cyclops, a Victorian gentlemen and master hypnotist.
We also find out Superman’s birthday and get to read some really bad and decidedly un-PC dialogue. An example of this would be a conversation between Clark Kent, then a TV reporter for Galaxy News, telling Morgan Edge (his boss) that Superman won’t fill in as a reporter for the station because the salary is so low. “He muttered something to me about Lincoln freeing the slaves,” Kent remarks. Wow…
The plot is typical early 70s camp as the Batman TV show had dictated themes to all DC books at the time and, honestly, really sucks. But that cover…it makes it all worth it!
