Flashback Friday

905961My favorite superhero is Spider Man but my favorite super team was, is and always will be the Legion of Super Heroes. Back in January of 1980, the Legion finally got their own ongoing book with issue #259. It marked the beginning of a fabulous era of storytelling with this heroic team from the 30th century and it brought me into the DC Universe for the first time.

Up until that point, I had always been a Marvel boy. But something about the Legion really appealed to me. They had that element of hard scifi to their story lines that I, a diehard Asimov, Heinlein, Clarke, and Niven fan, completely adored. They were a super hero team from the future…the way far away future…and it was completely mega!

The cover was quite poignant as Superboy leaves for good and Saturn Girl makes him forget about all their adventures together. Now, the Legion were truly on their own with all sorts of good, bad, and ugly things waiting to happen.

DC has always sort of shit all over the Legion and it makes me sad. These are truly beloved characters that deserve their own book in perpetuity. They don’t offer any collections of these early adventures so you’ll just have to get the back issues at your favorite local comic shop. If you are looking for some old comics to pick up and are tired of some of the newer comics DC is putting out, check out the Legion of Super Heroes. So awesome!
