Has it really been 50 issues of one of the most unique series I have ever read? Unwritten has indeed come a long way and this week’s milestone issue perfectly encapsulates the Harry Potter on Acid vibe that we have seen from the last 4+ years, thus it is my pick o’ the week.
I’ve always loved Mike Carey as a writer but he has really hit his stride with this series. He seems to have found just the right balance of suspense, horror, hipsterness, and action. This latest issue kicks off a 5 part arc that will bring readers into the Fables world and show how both books are intertwined thematically. I am honestly giddy with anticipation as to where this is going to go. The first half dozen pages are stunning!
A shout out as well to Peter Gross, the Cal Ripken like Iron Man of artists who has stuck around from issue #1. Pete’s pencils perfectly reflect the theme of the book and given it an ol’ timey storybook feel.
