Issue #115 of The Walking Dead marks the beginning of the long awaited epic, “All Out War.” My fascination with both comic and TV show have waned over the last few months due to predictable story lines and the inexplicable killing of the character of Andrea on the AMC series. What on EARTH were they thinking when they killed off the most integral character to the story next to Rick?
As Season 4 debuts tonight on AMC, one would think the comic series would make every effort to complement the kickoff with a kick ass new arc. Sadly, this is not the case as the first part of All Out War is vastly underwhelming. Perhaps it’s the all too easy to see “shocker” at the end of part one in which the character of Negan (whom I really think is terribly two dimensional) surprises Rick and his allies. Oh boy.
I know I sound sarcastic but this book (and the TV show) have the bar set at a higher level than most other stories because of how good it has been in the past. I can think of a zillion different ways Kirkman could have taken the story in the last year and a half and none of them began with killing Glenn (or Andrea on the show). Since “All Out War” is going to be unfolding over the next year, I’ll reserve final judgement until the conclusion but the fact is I just don’t give a shit about any of the characters anymore except for Rick and Andrea. Who are they going to kill that will make me sad? No one. And even the killing of Negan at this point (which is likely to happen in a jack off revenge porn sort of way) will ring hollow.
I guess we’ll just have to wait and see if my cynicism about this story will dissipate.
